Contents: Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (F.A.S.) and related defects result from maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and constitute the most common known teratogenic cause of mental deficiency. The three principal features of the syndrome are central nervous system dysfunction, growth deficiency, and craniofacial abnormalities. Many unresolved issues remain. All drinking women of child-bearing age should be screened. Identification and intervention with affected offspring and their parents are essential. Techniques for communicating with the developmentally disabled may be helpful. Prevention efforts are occurring on several fronts.
