Since most people have no idea alcoholism is an illness, they often attribute the behavior of their family member to lack of willpower or lack of caring. Families of alcoholics have learned through experience how to cope with this behavior. Alcoholics manipulate their families with words; because of this, families resist accepting the words of the counselor as he or she attempts to teach the family about the illness. Two examples are given which illustrate a method of experiential teaching which can help counter this resistance. Denial and the disease concept are addressed. |
