Staff Burnout in a Detox Center

Title: Staff Burnout in a Detox Center
Author: Rubington, Earl
Appeared in: Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly
Paging: Volume 1 (1984) nr. 2 pages 61-71
Year: 1984-05-25
Contents: There has been some talk but little research on staff burnout in treatment of alcoholics. This exploratory study of burnout in an alcohol detoxification center found that recovered alcoholics were more familiar with the concept of burnout, knew more fellow-workers who had burned out, and had more likely burned out themselves. Recovered alcoholics, if employed as counselors, seem at more risk of burning out than other workers in detox. At the same time, their special situation increases the chances in informal work group relations which act to slow down if not alleviate the symptoms of burnout.
