The purpose of this study was to compare the absenteeism of Navy enlisted women and men and to determine whether single parents lose more time than other personnel. Supervisors in 50 ships, squadrons, and shore commands worldwide maintained work diaries on their personnel. Analyses of variance were performed to investigate the effects of sex, marital status, and parental status on time at work. The results indicated that sex had no significant effect on absenteeism except where pregnant women from ships were temporarily assigned. Marital status and parental status also seldom reduced time available for work. Ability to be at work, rather than motivation to work, was the cause of whatever significant differences were found.
