Contents: The goals of a graduate education include preparing students to be contributing members of their chosen profession. Generally, this goal is considered met if a student graduates with the requisite skills to do his or her job. Equally important, however, is furthering our knowledge of the discipline and the profession through research. Graduate school administrators and faculty have a responsibility to educate, train, and involve students in research methodology and provide them with the skills necessary to publish. The methods used to educate students in this particular area of the profession are varied and robust. The challenge has traditionally been to maintain a standard of excellence in the theses and dissertations produced at a college or university while preserving academic freedom and encouraging students to submit for publication. At Springfield College, administrators and faculty debated in the late 1980s about the most appropriate way to balance these three critical interests with specific consideration for encouraging publication.
