Reliability of reading rate tests as a function of warm-up passage and time limit

Title: Reliability of reading rate tests as a function of warm-up passage and time limit
Author: Chang, Shou Shan
Hanna, Gerald S.
Appeared in: Literacy research and instruction
Paging: Volume 19 (1980) nr. 3 pages 232-238
Year: 1980-03
Contents: Will warm-up exercises before short reading rate measures improve reliability of measurement? Do two-minute rate tests yield more reliable scores than one-minute tests? To research these questions, students read three passages in counterbalanced order. Correlations were significantly greater between rate scores of second- and third-administered passages than between scores of first- and second-administered passages in an eighth-grade sample, but not in an eleventh-grade sample. Two-minute measures were significantly more reliable than one-minute rate measures in the grade eleven sample, but not in the grade eight sample. Implications for teachers were discussed.
