Inhoud: The classic theory of the neural basis of language functioning posits that the left hemisphere of the brain has well-defined modules, dedicated exclusively to language processing. The study of children with focal brain injuries to the left hemisphere has been used as a naturalistic experiment for determining how and when this neural specialization emerges. Descriptive studies of children with early left hemisphere brain injuries find patterns of functioning that are inconsistent with congenital specialization and suggestive of the concept that hemispheric specialization arises gradually throughout the period of language learning. Imaging studies demonstrate that homologous regions of the right hemisphere can serve language functioning after left hemisphere injury. New and expanded approaches to the study of children with early neural injuries are needed to understand fully the neural basis of language development. Language learning in many different populations of children, not just children with focal injuries, will contribute to new theories. Dependent variables should extend beyond vocabulary and syntax to include sophisticated measures of language comprehension, speech production, and pragmatics. The theoretical perspective should anticipate complex and plastic relations between neural substrate, brain injuries, and developmental outcomes.
