Elizabeth Bates was one of the pioneers of the modern study of child language development. She was one of the first to emphasize the pragmatic dimensions of language acquisition, one of the first to do systematic crosslinguistic acquisition research, one of the first to do systematic neurophysiological acquisition research, an originator of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory measurement instrument, co-originator of the Competition Model, champion of connectionist approaches, and a developmental theorist of exceptional breadth and depth. Here we review some of Elizabeth Bates's contributions to the field, organized around her major book publications.
