Inhoud: In this article, I report results of an acquisition experiment with a group of Spanish-speaking children regarding their knowledge of a semantic restriction that prevents a referring expression from coreferring with a pronoun in certain syntactic configurations if its referent lacks consciousness. Sixteen children (5 to 7 years old) participated in a modified Truth-Value Judgment Task (Crain and McKee (1985)). I show children's performance on the relevant sentences to be very similar to that of adults. Individual participant analyses confirm that children at this age possess the relevant semantic knowledge. Finally, I provide a model that shows how children can acquire knowledge of the semantic constraint using only positive data, and I suggest an epistemological implication of this research.
