The relationship between taking oral contraceptives by adolescents and their subsequent sexual behavior was examined. Subjects were 192 females who attended a youth medical clinic in Los Angeles for the purpose of obtaining oral contraceptives. Ninety-six subjects had been using oral contraceptives for 6-8 months (After Group) and 96 were just beginning to use (Before Group). Data were collected on the variables of: frequency of sexual intercourse; number of sexual partners; family relationships, peer relationships, religiousness; self esteem; and attitudes about sex. Results showed a higher frequency of sexual intercourse among After Group adolescents. However, there was no increase in number of sexual partners in this group. Subjects in both groups were neutral about religion and peers but expressed positive feelings about their family. Before Group subjects felt more strongly that their parents would disapprove of their sexual behavior. Subjects expressed positive feelings about their own sexual experiences. |
