A terrorist attack took place in Buenos Aires,1 10 years ago, targeting the heart of the Argentine Jewish community by blowing up the building of the Argentine Jewish Mutual Aid Association. However, it inflicted another deep wound to Argentine society as a whole. This brutal crime resulted in a death toll of 86 people who were buried under the rubble. The government's interference hindered the investigation and nobody has been found guilty yet. To aid affected individuals, the attacked institution organized a psychological assistance program that comprised 100 psychoanalysts. How does a child construct the multiple social meanings of a terrorist attack? How does individual working-through a social catastrophe relate to collective symbolic processes? A psychoanalyst's intervention in a child's individual treatment may aim to make temporary constructions from fragments heard or seen during a traumatic event, which may allow binding of these images with the affective traumatic situation and foster the process of psychic processing. |
