Inhoud: This case study examines the consequences of a principal's adherence to the guardian-of-stability role in a context in which cultural diversity suddenly becomes the order of the day. This study focuses on the principal of a rural high school in the Midwest, describes the ways in which he responds to the presence of the limited- and non-English-speaking Mexican teenagers in his school, and examines the consequences of these responses for the students as well as the teachers with whom they worked. The study's findings indicate that, if principals do not adequately monitor the environment and re-examine the customary policies and practices of their schools in response to changing conditions, they risk creating a situation in which teachers become frustrated and demoralized and in which students who differ from the norm are rendered effectively invisible.
