The purpose of the clinical experience for nursing students is to provide opportunities to acquire proficiency in nursing skills, to apply theory, and to synthesize learning. Being able to "practice" the nursing role in an environment conducive to accomplishing clinical objectives is essential to the development of competent nursing professionals. The nature of the clinical setting, therefore, becomes an important concern of nursing faculty when planning clinical experiences. This article focuses on the use of a long-term care facility as a clinical setting for students enrolled in a community health nursing clinical course. The reasons for choosing this setting, the methods used to adapt community health objectives, and the benefits to students are discussed. |
