Contents: The community health nursing faculty at Kent State University organized a family assessment instrument in accordance with the health pattern typology described by Gordon (1982). Students use the instrument with traditional and nontraditional families at every stage of the family life cycle. Reasons for initial visits to the families range from newborn health promotion to skilled nursing for acute and chronic conditions. The instrument helps students conceptualize the family as client and explore the concept of family nursing diagnoses.
