Incest and sexual abuse are receiving increased recognition as major community health problems. Because of the sensitive nature of these offenses, preventive measures by health practitioners through community education are difficult to introduce. A program of community education was developed to address issues of incest and sexual abuse of young children by utilizing an elementary school system and community health nurses to introduce an educational approach to second through fifth graders. The program relies on allegorical situations, short movies, or role playing and word games to facilitate the recognition and resolution of dangerous situations. The children were provided with problem solving skills stressing avoidance, specific personal safety measures, and sources for help. Eight hundred and thirty children, 30 school teachers and 26 community members participated. The program successfully presented information on these volatile subjects to a group at risk for sexual abuse, namely the elementary school child. Follow-up indicates the presentations were valued by the community. School nurses throughout the county have adopted this program for presentation to their elementary school clients. |
