In contrast to previous treatment approaches to conversion reactions, the current case study illustrates the use of a practical, multi-modal treatment for an adolescent's conversion paralysis/anesthesia. The therapy applied a functional analysis of the symptom's development with direct behavioral treatment of the conversion reaction and a rearranging of the family/environmental conditions which gave rise to the maladaptive behavior. This new approach functionally combines direct treatment of the conversion behavior (which may be ignored in traditional, dynamic therapies) with environmental/family treatment (which may be ignored in purely operant approaches) to yield a pragmatic brief treatment for conversion reactions. |
