Surveyed 1,384 junior high and high school students in a semirural community regarding their health-related concerns and perceptions of helping agents. Significant proportions of adolescents reported experiencing such problems as trouble with parents (70%), depression (62%), feeling overweight (46%), and suicidal thoughts (36%). Females, high school students (particularly ninth graders), and students at lower socioeconomic levels appeared to be at higher risk. Regardless of demographic characteristics, the students were generally unaware of existing professional helping agencies, and they were reluctant to seek help for a variety of reasons.
