Intellectual Competence in Children of Depressed Parents

Title: Intellectual Competence in Children of Depressed Parents

Contents: Intellectual profiles of 41 children (ages 7 to 19) with at least one parent with major depression were analyzed. Comparisons with normative groups included Verbal-Performance differences, subtest variability, Freedom From Distractibility subtests, and low Information-high Similarities subtest pattern. Additional analyses assessed differences on the above measures for (a) children with one versus two depressed parents, and (b) children who themselves had a psychiatric diagnosis versus children without a diagnosis. Compared with controls, children at risk had impaired intellectual competence on subtest variability and on the pattern of low Information-high Similarities. Evaluation of differential effects of increased familial risk and of child diagnostic status within the group showed no significant differences. We hypothesize that these cognitive deficits may occur through alterations in the quality of parenting and the stresses of familial psychopathology.
