Inhoud: This article discusses ethical and programmatic issues raised by the use of emotionally disturbed institutionalized children in social science or nontherapeutic research and proposes guidelines to monitor such use. issues discussed center on the protection of children's rights to privacy, freedom of choice, and confidentiality. Concerns are examined in relation to key points in the research process. Perspectives are documented with material drawn from federal regulations, research ethics, and developmental psychology. This article, which is a response to the March, 1983, federal regulations for children involved in research and is a supplement to extant professional ethical standards, is intended to have implications for the involvement o fall children in social science research.
