Three patterns of family participation in assessment conferences were studied to determine the impact on assessment information, client satisfaction with the assessment process, and follow through on decisions. The patterns were (1) parents interviewed first, (2) child interviewed first, and (3) family interviewed as a unit. As predicted, interviewing the family as a unit was highly effective (and no less effective than the other patterns) and is seen as having potential additional psychological and practical benefits.
