Classical and operant procedures in the treatment of a case of food aversion in a young child

Titel: Classical and operant procedures in the treatment of a case of food aversion in a young child
Auteur: Siegel, Lawrence J.
Verschenen in: Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology
Paginering: Jaargang 11 (1982) nr. 2 pagina's 167-172
Jaar: 1982
Inhoud: A six-year-old child's aversion to table foods, which had resulted in a highly restricted diet, was successfully treated with a gradual shaping program which manipulated the respondent components of the eating response. Operant procedures alone were not sufficient to modify the maladaptive eating pattern. In addition, a variation of desensitization was used to eliminate strong avoidance behaviors to swallowing the food which were producing adverse physiological responses. The entire treatment program was conducted in the home with progressively decreasing assistance from the therapist. At the time of a six month follow-up assessment, the child had gained substantial weight and was eating three complete meals of table food with no appearance of gagging or vomiting.
