The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of marital satisfaction and divorce with parent-child interactions. Subjects were forty-one mother-child pairs who had been referred to a Psychology Clinic for treatment of the child's behavior problems. Based on the mother's completion of the Marital Adjustment Test, three groups of mothers (and children) at different levels of marital satisfaction were formed. A fourth group consisted of divorced mothers and their children. Outcome measures consisted of parent and child behaviors collected in the home by independent observers and parent-completed questionnaires concerning their own adjustment and their child's adjustment. Results indicated that parents who reported a high satisfaction with their marriages used significantly more positive attention with their child than divorced mothers. Furthermore, parents in the low maritallp satisfied group were significantly more depressed than the other three groups of mothers. Implications of the findings are discussed. |
