Children and divorce: The child's view

Jaar: 1981
Inhoud: In this study, 84 elementary school children whose mothers had responded to a questionnaire on their children's reactions to divorce, were interviewed to determine how they felt about the divorce and its aftermath. Where possible, comparisons were made between the children's responses and those of their mothers. The results point to the importance of the fathers in the lives of these children, despite the fact that 23% of the children were seen by their mothers as having little or no opportunity to build a relationship with their fathers. The children wished they spend more time with their fathers, looked forward to seeing them, and the overwhelming majority rated their relationships with their fathers as good or excellent. The children's perceptions differed markedly from their mothers on several issues: the atmosphere in the home prior to divorce, the intensity of the children's feelings before and after the divorce and the wisdom of divorce as an alternative. In general, mothers diminished the negative effects of divorce on the children—perhaps out of their own pain and guilt.
