Inhoud: In this article I describe a 3-year qualitative study using ethnographic methodology to examine communication strategies of 3 mothers who had a preschooler with a language disorder or impairment. Each mother established a communicative link between herself and her child, who had limited expressive speech, by constructing unique communication strategies in the home environment. I examined the role and function of communication among 3 mother-child dyads in and across three settings: home, school, and clinic. These 3 mothers understood the nature of their child's language impairment in different ways and found it difficult to change their interactions with their child even when they discovered how the home strategies limited their child's social interaction within the larger community. The mothers'new knowledge did not lead to immediate changes in their behavior because changing communication in the home meant that each mother had to reconstruct her personal role.
