Inhoud: Both multiattribute and global designs have been proposed for surveys that evaluate teaching effectiveness, but when the context within which teacher evaluations are interpreted is examined, contextual validity should be considered. This study was designed to examine the relation between students' responses to multiattribute and global items for summative judgments. Two strongly related latent factors of overall teaching quality (learning state and organization) were identified that accounted for the majority of variance between student responses to attribute items. Additionally, a more global construct of perceived "quality of instruction" was found. Because the global variance was substantial when compared to multiattribute variance, and global items and attribute items were found to be highly correlated, administrators may rely on the global information for general summative judgments.
