Discourse structure includes mechanisms that allow the speaker or writer to tell the hearer or reader that certain propositions relate to the discourse as a whole in particular ways. These mechanisms seem to be language specific; they are at any rate difficult to explain to a speaker of another language, as any English speaker who has tangled with the imperfect-preterite distinction in French or Spanish knows. In Totontepec Mixe of Mexico the stage-event distinction, which permeates both clause and word grammar, is of this type. Since its characteristics have never been described in the linguistic literature, this paper goes into some detail not only on the discourse implications of the distinction, but on the manner in which it is communicated. |
