Crano (1991) noted pitfalls associated with the use of financial incentives; this article considers further implications of the assumptions he identified and the advice he offered. Some of those assumptions rely on a specific theoretical framework, and investigators are advised to explore other frameworks as well. In addition, the violation of assumptions need not inevitably entail consequences as severe as those implied by Crano's remarks. Finally, Crano couched his discussion of underlying psychological processes mainly in terms of methodological caveats and related research strategies; the implementation of methodological techniques can capitalize on theoretical advances, however, and, hence, an alternative perspective considers how Crano's article can provide leads for new areas of theory development.
