Contents: Western social scientists have consistently found that females have more intense same-sex friendships than males. It was hypothesized that this would not be true in certain societies where men are freer to self-disclose and to engage in other behaviors that lead to friendship. Students in India and in the United States responded to a questionnaire that asked them how much they liked and loved their best friend and how willing they were to disclose four types of information that differed in whether the information was about themselves versus their families and whether it was favorable versus unfavorable. They were also asked in what activities they engaged with this person and what functions the friendship served. Results showed that among Americans the sexes differed in how much they loved their friend, overall disclosure, some of the activities, and some of the functions of friendship, whereas among Indians there were no sex differences in any of these issues. Respondents in both societies were less willing to disclose information about family than about self, and this difference was greater for unfavorable than for favorable information.
