During the past decade, indigenous organizations and movements have been debating and mobilizing around the question of territorial restructuring as a way to reconfigure indigenous territories and indigenous political authority. Although these goals may be seen by others as utopian and inconsistent with modernization, for the indigenous peoples they are part of a political project of decolonization. Advancing innovative proposals, indigenous movements are responding in creative ways to the challenges posed by a social order that does not represent the indigenous peoples and fails to fulfill their expectations. This essay explores the drive for territorial reorganization as a political proposal for change that comes from the indigenous peoples themselves. |
