An instrument named the Single Fibre Analyser (SIFAN) was built to measure the diameter profile of single wool fibres. By scanning every 40 μm along the length of a 100-mm fibre, a detailed diameter profile of a fibre could be measured in less than 2 minutes. The measurement error of the SIFAN was low (s.d. = 0.6 μm) in view of the large variation in diameter over relatively short lengths of fibre. Fibre-diameter profiles measured along single fibres by the SIFAN were compared and correlated closely with single-fibre and 2-mm-snippet profiles measured with the Optical Fibre Diameter Analyser. |
