The regularity of Malimo stitch-bonded fabrics may be considered in terms of the frequencies with which different numbers of weft threads/stitch occur. Expected frequencies of weft threads/stitch and their dependence on stitch length are derived for two simple models of the fabric structure. In the first model, the weft position is fixed. In the second, allowance is made for quasi-random displacement of the weft before stitching occurs. Observed values of weft threads/stitch have been obtained, mainly by using a narrow sampling machine, and can largely be accounted for in terms of the initial geometry of the weft sheet; much of the discrepancy is consistent with the kind of displacement considered in the second model. The three-dimensional structure of the weft sheet and some weft-patterning effects are also discussed. |
