Automation must, of necessity, incur increased capital costs. As capital costs are increased in relation to tending costs, so the machine speeds and the associated productivity have to rise. To give an adequate return on investment, it is necessary for the materials-handling costs to be reduced. The acceptable ratio of the increase in fixed costs to the decrease in materials-handling costs depends on the machine characteristics and the quality of the material being processed. As the size of the investment is increased, the machine speed should also be increased, which adds extra pressure to adjust the machine characteristics or the material quality in a direction that allows higher productivity without a concurrent increase in fault production. New forms of quality control in staple-fibre spinning are needed to pave the way to the higher levels of productivity necessary to reap the full benefits of automation. |
