This paper analyses the role of the state in Singaporean economic development. The paper begins with a general discussion of the economic achievement of Singapore in the past three decades. Interventive policies and measures are presented and their rationale discussed. Further, the paper evaluates the impact of these policies on industrial and labour market structures. On the one hand, these policies have brought economic success by elevating Singapore's economy, through foreign investment, to be part of the global economic structure. On the other hand, these policies have suppressed the development of local business enterprises, and undermined labour interests and power. An evaluation of the state's interventionist approach to economic development was formulated. Elitism, Confucianism, and pragmatism are sources for state actions. In light of recent privatization strategy, the paper concludes that the prospect for liberalization in Singapore remains doubtful.
