This paper presents the Findings of a multi-country research project on street children and youth in urban Latin America. Prior studies of street children have been too superficial, being primarily concerned with identifying the socio-demographic characteristics of this population. A more detailed, analytic view of the situation of street children has been lacking. By using an action research method, our data indicate that economic factors underlie the marginalization of most Latin American children rather than familial factors (e.g., abuse and neglect), as is so often the case with North American youth. |
