Inhoud: “Women, Poverty and Policy: A World Wide Challenge” looks at the current poverty situation of many women and examines policy in the U.S. and abroad, designed to relieve their economic distress. In part one it argues that while policies have made some differences they have failed to make substantial changes in women's economic position because they have inadequately accounted for the vast amounts of unwaged caregiving work that women do. As caregiving work (e.g., parenting and caring for ill or frail others) has been left out of the developing wage structure, the people who do the work have been left out of major income support structures. It suggests that what is needed is a redefinition of work which acknowledges reproduction and human care as central tasks of any society, and the development of policy which supports people who do the work.
