A coal mine in interior Alaska has had an ongoing problem with spoil pile instability. Pre-mining slope failures, which had come to equilibrium, were reactivated by placement of spoil onto the failed ground. Finite element and limit equilibrium analyses indicates that deep-seated sliding along an underclay, slip along the interface between the spoil and subspoil ground and near-surface slump may be all occurring simultaneously as ground water migrates through these areas. |
