Mine operators and regulatory agencies need sound criteria and methods for use in judging when reclamation is complete and expensive bonds can be released, soil productivity has been taken as the logical criterion for evaluating reclamation effectiveness. There is growing interest in developing a quantitative soil productivity index (PI) based on direct measurement of soil properties. By combining fuzzy set and expert aystem theories, an effective method, the Fuzzy PI Model, has been developed for evaluating soil productivity and reclamation quality. Using the model, some reclaimed and agricultural plots were evaluated. The results suggest that the Fuzzy PI Model has potential as an effective, quantitative method for predicting the productivity of undisturbed or reclaimed mine soils.
