The application of diaphragm wall technology to the recovery of ore reserves underlying a tidally active waste dump is described. The wall, 300,000 ft2 in area and 32 inches in width is constructed of low strength ± 200 psi, plastic concrete and will be subjected to approximately 100 feet of hydraulic head. Built within a highly permeable marine waste dump, the wall will permit a 300 foot pushback of the pit wall thereby providing access to an additional four years of ore reserves. The paper reviews the project from its inception to the commencement of mining including the site investigation, concerns and challenges of the engineering design and construction obstacles and their solutions. The paper concludes with comments on the monitoring system employed and the performance of the wall to date. |
