Inhoud: This paper presents the results obtained from in-situ tests which were carried out to map the natural variability of in-situ densities and porosities in two tailing dams. These dams. named as A and B, were designed to be built using hydraulic fill techniques according to the upstream method. Based on the porosity variability, strength parameters were obtained in laboratory and stability analyses carried out for determining safety factory and failure probabilities (reliability). These analyses were extended to the liquefaction potential for these two tailing dams, comparing their results One case study presented higher values (over 2.0) of the average F L (factor of safety against liquefaction) and smaller values of the failure probability (over 1/1,000). In the other case study the average F L was closer to 1.3 and the failure Probability was 3/100. These results signal that the quality control methodology based on mapping in-situ densities and porosities when applied to granular tailing can be successfully improved by adding liquefaction potential analyses coupled to probabilistic methods.
