The use of computer modelling has long been a subject of interest and numerous models have been developed for mining and geotechnical applications. Over the years the Geotechnics Group of School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering (SChEME) at the University of Nottingham has been engaged in a number of applied research activities, including surface subsidence, strata caving behaviour, Rock Mass Classification and roadway support design. With the increasing closure of mine workings, the Group is actively investigating the environmental problems associated with active and abandoned mines. The paper briefly introduces some of the on-going research projects in mining related problems using computer-modelling techniques. |
