Major tree species planted in pre-law (1930-1968) and post-law (1975-1995) reclamation are listed. An early importance of shortleaf and other pines gave way to greater use of hardwoods. Contemporary planting mixes in southern Illinois commonly include green ash (Fraxinus pcnnsylvanica), silver maple (Acer saccharinum), sycamore (Platanus occidentalis), baldcypress (Taxodium distichum), and white, pin, or northern red oak (Quercus alba, Q. palustris, or Q. rubra)
