Inhoud: Dragline operations in the Australian coal industry are now working deeper and more complex pits. Future operations will require more detailed planning and more effective guidance of the digging sequence to optimise the rate of coal uncovery. This challenge is being tackled by a series of integrated dragline engineering projects at The University of Queensland. This paper reviews the progress of one of these projects designed to identify the impact of the difference between the actual digging sequence and the designed sequence. The operating parameters that influence block design are identified and a procedure is described for the collection of detailed data on the actual dragline positioning, digging and dumping operations within a block. Three dimensional graphics software and a scaled physical model will be used to interpret this data in order-to provide more effective advice to dragline operators and supervisors on detailed operating practices.
