The use of explosives to cast overburden has increased rapidly during the 1980' S. Several coal mines and quarries worldwide utilize blast casting to mine higher strip ratio pits or to improve the economics of mining existing pits. It is visualized that blast casting methods have the potential for successful application to some Canadian coal mines. This paper reviews the existing global technology in this field and identifies the situations where its use in Canadian mines could contribute to lowering the overall cost of overburden handling. |
