This paper presents a review of two unique methods of tailings disposal which have been introduced in metal mines in Canada. The thickened discharge method proposed by Robinsky and the subaerial method proposed by Knight and Haile are reviewed. The limitations in application of these methods, particularly in regard to topographic and climatic restraints in Canada, are demonstrated with case examples. To satisfy the objectives of stability and economy, designers must consider conventional as well as unique methods of tailings disposal. |
