Titel: Shall I dare to come alive: Long term effects of painful beginnings
Auteur: Blessing, Deborah
Verschenen in: Infant observation
Paginering: Jaargang 9 (2006) nr. 1 pagina's 53-64
Jaar: 2006-04-01
Inhoud: Breakthroughs in reproductive technology have allowed infertile couples to conceive and many very premature babies to survive. While these advances are welcome and celebrated, there is little information about their emotional impact and what the long-term effects might be. In this paper a link is made between one infant's very premature birth and extended stay on a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and her later struggles with an eating disorder. A clinical case is presented which reveals how this early painful experience for the parents and baby set the stage for patterns of being with each other and internal relationships that remained out of awareness, but repeatedly enacted by each member of the family. In presenting this material the author has several aims in mind: to promote understanding about the early genesis of eating disorders; to suggest the importance of infant observation in the training of eating disorder professionals; and to add clinical data to a growing literature describing the aftermath of NICU experience. Specialized infant observations as well as long-term follow up of NICU families could help identify the needs of these vulnerable families and provide responsive interventions.
