This paper is an account of an observation that began antenatally and continued until the arrival of a sibling when Lucy was 11 months old. Gaze and the importance of seeing and being seen were central themes in the observation. This infant showed an early preference to use gaze to prevent her from falling apart and to provide a sense of being held together when she was feeling uncontained. The pregnancy with Lucy, following a period of infertility, resulted from assisted reproductive technology. The potential impact of this on the mother's capacity to see her infant is considered. The role of the observer in providing containment for mother and infant through gaze is explored. |
