Inhoud: Children with autism are notoriously poor listeners: indeed, they are often thought to be deaf. The child's 'theory of mind' may be inadequate, but his theory of a listener, as well as of a listenable-to person, may also be deficient. Yet there may be a proto-theory of mind, a proto-theory of a listener and talker, on which a carefully calibrated treatment may build. The technical issues for the psychotherapist are difficult: how can we reach a child with little or no language? How can we talk to such a child? The paper describes work with Joseph that attempted to reach the right developmental level by being both playfully receptive and playfully challenging at different moments. Both the languages of 'motherese' and 'fatherese' were used.
