Shifting triangles: Images of father in sequences from parent-infant psychotherapy

Titel: Shifting triangles: Images of father in sequences from parent-infant psychotherapy
Auteur: Woodhead, Judith
Verschenen in: Infant observation
Paginering: Jaargang 7 (2004) nr. 2-3 pagina's 76-90
Jaar: 2004-05-01
Inhoud: Most attachment, psychoanalytic and infant research has focused on the mother-infant dyadic relationship. The father, along with triangular relationships, has been largely absent. The image of the triangle has often been used to depict mother-father-infant relationships. Triangular relationships bring specific opportunities for infant development. This paper distinguishes between actual mothers, fathers and infants and symbolic depictions of their functions that can be embodied by either gender—in parents and therapists alike. A detailed clinical picture is provided of how a young child and his mother used myself as therapist to provide experience of a triangular relationship, within which missing paternal functions were evoked.
