Bullying, a Tale of Everyday Life: reflections on insider research

Title: Bullying, a Tale of Everyday Life: reflections on insider research
Author: Arnold, Fiona
Appeared in: Educational action research
Paging: Volume 2 (1994) nr. 2 pages 183-193
Year: 1994
Contents: This paper describes a research project undertaken as part of the requirements for an MA in Applied Research in Education at the University of East Anglia. The research was conducted over two terms in a middle school of 240 pupils where the author works team-teaching in Year 6. Within the context of heightened awareness of bullying as a result of media coverage of the problem in schools, the author wished to access the views of pupils on 'bullying' and to study the sociodynamlcs of pupil-peer relationships. During the course of the research programme parents at the school raised concerns regarding bullying and a review of policy and coordinated response to unacceptable behaviour is underway. The project itself led to interesting conclusions that bullying is rooted at one extreme of the range of 'normal' behaviour arising in group social interactions amongst children. At a different level the process of engaging in the research has also led to interesting observations and experience on the nature of action research and the interaction between action research and 'normal school life'.
