A sound understanding of the role and significance of theory in scientific investigation is dependent upon a clear and unambiguous definition of the nature of theory. This article sets out to show how theory may be defined in order to elucidate its decisive influence in the scientific undertaking. Academics, researchers and practitioners constantly engage in “theorising”, whether or not they are conscious of this fact and of the implications that misunderstanding of their activities may have for the meaningfulness of their findings. In the modern world, where researchers and practitioners are commissioned and paid for their investigation and recommendations, it is imperative that they know what they are doing and why they are doing it and that they openly and honestly acknowledge the limitations of their investigation. Without a sound knowledge of theory, which guides the entire search for knowledge, they will inevitably fail to account for their findings. |
